Gardaí were last night hunting three men who carried out an armed and masked raid on a filling station in Foynes, in which at least two shots were fired.
The shocking incident occurred at Reidy’s filling station on shortly before 11pm on Monday.
One of the raiders is said to have forced a woman from her car, which was parked outside the premises, into the shop at knifepoint. Two other men also wearing balaclavas and armed with a pump action shotgun and a single barrel shotgun then entered the premises. At least three staff members who were reportedly in the premises at the time of the raid were then ordered to empty the cash tills by the gunmen who fired at least two shots during the raid. It’s understood around €1,000 in cash was handed over to the raiders who fled the shop on foot. Gardai believe the men then made their getaway in a car, which had been concealed close by. A number of ambulance crews were also alerted to the scene however they were stood down after a doctor confirmed that no one in the shop had been injured. An alert was issued to Garda stations about the men who were described as speaking with accents, of approximately 5 ft 8 in height and of slim build, wearing dark clothes.
It’s also believed the armed Garda wing, the Emergency Response Unity, was involved in the search for the men on the night in question. Gardai at Askeaton are appealing for information on 061-601630. |
