Irony of heating debate not lost on councillors

Being left out in the cold was the hot topic at this week’s Social Policy and Housing Strategic Policy Committee as concerns were raised about senior citizens living in chilly conditions and the city’s central heating programme was discussed

However, the irony was not lost on members as they complained about the low temperatures in the council chamber itself.

Cllr Pat Kennedy said that he was concerned about elderly people living in the bungalows in Vizes Court in the city as residents waited for new adjacent units to be completed.

He said that some people were enduring “very cold conditions” in the complex before asking the council for an update on when new accommodation would be ready.

Senior Executive Officer in the housing department, Ger Dillon, said that it is hoped that the first phase of the development will be complete by February or March and 12 existing residents can then move in.

A number of interested residents living in flats in Hyde Road will also be offered one of the 16 units.

He added that design and planning negotiations on Phase Two of Vizes Court is ongoing and it is anticipated that there will be at least more than 30 units provided in total.

Cllr Kennedy welcomed the news and said that the bungalows have gradually become colder since the pioneering complex was built some years ago.

“I am calling on the council to finish the units and make the first phase available immediately. One woman living there is over 90 so I’m delighted that Mr Dillon has guaranteed that present residents will be transferred into the brand new units as soon as possible.”
