Limerick had the highest percentage of personal injury claims in Ireland last year with 532 successful claims and over €12 million in compensation handed out to Shannonsiders.

The Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB) said that Limerick accounted for around 6.69% of the 8,200 claims made in Ireland during 2007 and the overall average award was €22,057.

It is no surprise at how popular the PIAB system has become in Limerick and beyond with awards being made at the same level as the courts but four times faster (over two years quicker) and at a 70% less delivery cost.

Some of the categories which local people can make claims include employer liability, motor liability and public liability.

Individual awards ranged from just €1,000 to €620,000 and the PIAB uses the same guide to compensation levels for particular injuries which is used by the courts—the Book of Quantum.

The body delivered savings of €40million in 2007 and this “should feed through to lower insurance premiums for consumers”.

“During 2007 PIAB reached full flow activity and the sustainable benefits of the non adversarial model are now clear. PIAB is not just faster and more efficient but claimants benefit from awards at the same level as the courts whilst avoiding the stress of a court appearance,” said Chief Executive, Patricia Byron.

“2007 saw an increase in allowances for medical costs based on a case by case assessment of claimants’ needs rather than a flat fee approach. PIAB also extended the circumstances in which vulnerable personal injury claimants may be allowed additional fees and expenses.”

Claimants fill in forms, submit a medical report from a treating practitioner and pay €50 to have their personal injury assessed.

PIAB can be contacted on Lo-Call 1890-829121 or by post at PIAB, PO Box 8, Clonakilty, Co Cork.
