Limerick Sinn Féin spokesman, Maurice Quinlivan, has rejected a suggestion made last week by the Small Firms Association (SFA) to cut the minimum wage by €1 an hour, calling the measures “Dickensian”.

Mr Quinlivan is urging local members of the SFA to reject this call and lobby their national organisation to withdraw its “attack on Limerick’s lowest paid workers”.

“It is very disappointing that the lowest paid most vulnerable workers in society are the first to be targeted in a time of recession rather than those who can actually afford it. We in Sinn Féin are determined to ensure that, unlike the recession of the 1980’s, the burden of this recession will not fall primarily on the shoulders of the low paid,” he said.

“This call from the SFA for a €1 cut in the minimum wage is very worrying and indeed callous. It is also very disappointing that the lowest paid and most vulnerable workers in society are the first to be targeted in a time of recession rather than those who can actually afford to take a hit.”

Mr Quinlivan said that gas prices have been given a rise of 17.5% with another large increase in prices expected in January, of nesxt year.
