The 43-year old woman, named as Carol Hickey a native of Knocklong, was pronounced dead eight days ago at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle, after she was brought there from a house in Patrickswell.
Gardai understand that Ms Hickey had called to a house in Laurel Park on Tuesday evening last week.
At around 7.30pm on the night in question, an occupant in the house alerted the emergency services that then transferred Ms Hickey to hospital.
Gardai who attended the scene immediately sealed off the house to conduct an examination of the area.
“We don’t know as yet what happened to the woman. All lines of enquiry are to be investigated. We will no further after a post mortem and if needed we may be looking at further tests down the line. It’s not clear-cut. I’m sorry to be blunt but I can’t tell you very much,” said Supt Frank O’Brien of Roxboro Road Garda Station.
The communities of Galbally and Knocklong are in mourning following the tragic and untimely death of Ms Hickey, who was Secretary of Galbally Community Association.
The 43-year-old mother-of-four is understood to have become unwell at the house in Patrickswell before she was taken to hospital.
Following a post mortem, carried out by the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, Gardai said that there were no obvious signs of foul play but that further tests would be carried out on the body before they would confirm what direction their investigation would take.
"We are treating the death as suspicious until we are told otherwise. We have to treat this like any other serious investigation involving the death of person," a Garda spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, Cllr John Gallahue, has passed on the Council’s condolences to Ms Hickey’s family.
Ms Hickey was originally from Knocklong, but had been living in Galbally for a number of years.
