SINN Fein spokesman in Limerick, Maurice Quinlivan has praised local Gardaí after a seizure of heroin with a value of €300,000 in the City, but has called for a dedicated drugs task force to be deployed in Limerick.
Mr Quinlivan said the seizure showed that the heroin epidemic is not confined to Dublin and called for the dedicated Garda unit to be set up.
“I want to congratulate the Gardaí involved in the successful operation. It will bring a sense of comfort to the people of Limerick that these drugs will not now hit the streets.  However, we are aware that this quantity of drugs is a just a small percentage of the actual amounts entering the City and hitting the streets,” Mr Quinlivan said.
“This seizure is proof, if proof were needed, that the heroin epidemic is not confined to Dublin. I have been calling for a dedicated drugs task force to be established and deployed in Limerick City for the past number of years. I reiterate that call today in light of the significant seizure of heroin in Moyross last night,” Mr Quinlivan added.
The local Sinn Fein party spokesman also added that the cuts to the Drugs Initiatives and Young Peoples Services Fund announced in the Budget 2009 “must be reversed”.
“We simply cannot allow the fight against drugs to be hindered in this way. The stakes are too high,” Mr Quinlivan said.
A woman, aged in her 20s, was arrested in connection with the heroin seizure and brought to Henry Street Garda Station for questioning.
She was later released without charge and a file on the matter is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for his consideration.
