The Minister for Health Mary Harney, who was on a whirlwind tour of the city earlier this week, has presented a prestigious award to Limerick cancer care centre Milford Hospice for excellence in healthcare provision.

Minister Harney presented the Limerick facility with its Irish Health Services Accreditation Board (IHSAB) award at a special ceremony at the Centre on Monday in front of a large attendance.

The award, which is the culmination of two years work at the Centre, is granted to healthcare providers who meet standards of excellence across both clinical and non-clinical areas.

Milford Care Centre is the first non-acute facility of its kind to receive such an award in Ireland and the services of Milford Hospice, Milford Nursing Home and Milford Day Care Centre are now fully accredited by the IHSAB Award.

“This is truly a proud day for Milford Care Centre and would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of our wonderful staff, volunteers and the very many community partners who support the work of Milford Care Centre on a day to day basis, they in fact make Milford the very ‘special’ place it is today,” remarked Pat Quinlan, Chief Executive Milford Care Centre.

Mr Quinlan went on to acknowledge the fact that Minister Harney was making this award in person and this he said was a clear indication of her “positive commitment” to ensuring the highest quality and safety standards in all health care settings and highlighted the fact that to date the development of Hospice and Older Persons services had remained high on the Minister’s priority list.

He also went on to thank both the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Atlantic Philanthropies for their support in helping to make Milford a reality and the staff of the former Irish Health Services Accreditation Board for their practical input and encouragement along the way.
