Radical plans to develop the city centre have been unveiled to city councillors and local people are invited to give their opinion on the City Centre Strategy which will change the face of the city over the next decade.
Arthur’s Quay will undergo significant redevelopment in the years to come. The document revealed a detailed vision of various ”zones” of the city aiming to create “a vibrant riverside city with a centre of world-class excellence for working, learning, leisure and living”. Zones include the Medieval Quarter, the Georgian Quarter and the Central Core and each area is given individual targets and sites preferred for redevelopment. Themes include access and movement, urban design, housing, heritage and culture and retailing while projects are given estimated start and finish dates. For example, a cycle network from the city centre to UL should be complete by September 2010. Pedestrianisation of the “night club quarter” will commence immediately and will be finished in 18 months while pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street up to the Crescent area will start in March 2009 and will finish by 2011. Housing strategy will be overhauled with new guidelines expected for city centre developments. The feasibility of a sports festival for Limerick will be examined next year while areas such as walkways and the best location for a tourist office will be examined. A “creative industries quarter” is under consideration, as is the development and preservation of the city’s Georgian structures. There will also be more initatives designed to entice retailers to set up in the city centre rather than on the outskirts while strategic blocks of land will be released for redevelopment. A full plan is available from City Hall or online on www.limerickcity.ie and Mayor Ger Fahy welcomed public views on the strategy. |
