The team behind The First Tee golfing and life skills program currently running at Rathbane Golf Course hope to make the initiative available at other Limerick golf courses in the next two years.

John Warren of The First Tee Ireland, said that the programme for schoolchildren—mostly from the city’s southside—has been a massive success since it began in 2005.

At Monday’s meeting of the Culture and Sport Special Policy Committee meeting, Mr Warren told members that positive attitude and values from sport “can transfer to everyday life”.

Over 212 young people of all ages, drawn from local schools such as Galvone NS and St Enda’s Community College, have taken part in the weekly one-hour sessions of the initiative or the “broadened reach” of its summer camps.

“The World Golf Foundation program began in 1997 and has five international venues including the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Limerick is one of 13 program sites in Ireland,” said Mr Warren.

Mr Warren said that The First Tee is now looking for more golf clubs and by extension, schools and community groups, to take part in the program as it plans to expand between 2008 and 2010. The self-funding and corporate backed charity will set up local and regional trusts to achieve this goal.
