St Joseph’s Scout Unit has paid a special tribute to well-known local scouting personality, William O’Loughlin, who passed away recently. ![]() The late William O’Loughlin of St Joseph’s Scout Unit A statement issued on behalf of the entire unit said that Mr O’Loughlin first joined St Joseph’s in 1938 and will never be forgotten in Limerick circles. “He was a legend in every sense of the word where scouting is concerned. He had many talents and was gifted with his hands. No task was too big or too small for him to undertake. He was in great demand by different units to give courses to their groups in pioneering, first aid, cooking, camp craft and other scouting skills. He loved teaching the various skills,” it read. “Bill had a great sense of humour and loved to share a joke with his colleagues. He was a friend to everyone. During his career in Scouting he received many awards. He was the proud recipient of the Silver Wolfhound (Cu Chuchulann) Award, which is the highest award in scouting. The Chief Scout nominates people for this prestigious award and everyone agreed that Bill was a very worthy recipient.”
“In 1967, he led a group from St Joseph's Unit on a trip to Rome. It was a memorable trip to say the least. The trip is still talked about forty years later! Bill's organisational skills were brilliant. He was also excellent as a campfire leader,” his scouting colleagues added. Mr O’Loughlin was also a member of the Lourdes Hospitalite Group. “Bill always put everyone else first and himself last. The scout organisation will be all the poorer by his passing away. He was very proud of his scout uniform and what it stood for. May he rest in Peace.” |
