Mairead Geary, originally from Clare, but who had been living on the South Circular Road in Limerick, travelled to the town of Stresa with an Irish tour group last Tuesday.
She had travelled with a group of 40 other Limerick pensioners and retired people when she went missing.
She was last seen at lunchtime on last Friday when she said she was taking a
cable car up to a viewing point on nearby Mount Mottarone.
The alarm was raised when she did not return for dinner last Friday evening.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a major search operation is underway for the pensioner and that the Irish Embassy in Rome is liaising with the Italian police.
Members of Ms Geary's family have also travelled out to Italy to help with the search, while the search, which has been concentrated on the 4,500 feet heights of Mount Mottarone.
The area around Stresa, down at lake level, had also been searched.
Ms Geary is said to be in excellent health, given her age, and that she walks every day.
It’s understood that it would have been normal enough for her to set out on walks on her own.
Police spokesmen in Stresa were reluctant to speculate on what might have happened to Ms Geary, saying only that the search would continue for the time being.
Carabinieri (police), mountain rescue teams, fire fighters and one helicopter have all been used in the search.
Once a permanent fixture on the Grand Tour of Italy, Stresa has been an important tourist venue for the last 150 years.
Prayers were being said in Limerick for the safe return of the local grandmother.
Ms Geary's group of 40 holidaymakers, who arrived at the mountain resort last week, were due to travel home yesterday.
