The Heineken European rugby Cup was again presented in front of Munster fans at an audience with Axel in the UL Arena last Wednesday night.

Rugby fans from all over the mid-west and Cork and Kerry travelled to the event and packed out the UL Arena to celebrate the career of one of the giants of Irish rugby, whose retirement from the game came into effect following Munster’s victory over Toulouse in Cardiff.

The ‘Audience with Anthony’ was one of three testimonial events that took place last week in Limerick to mark the magnificent career of the stalwart (number eight), with two days of golf at Dromoland and a gala banquet wrapping up the celebration.

The testimonial was organised by a small group of supporters and friends of the first Munster captain to get his hands on the Heineken Cup, among them Mick Galwey who said that Munster’s victory over Toulouse had, as expected, only served to heighten interest hugely in the UL Arena Event in particular.

“As you would expect, there was a very big push on tickets for the UL Arena event since the Heineken Cup win. We had a phenomenal response and very big numbers turned up on the night as well. To facilitate this we put the tickets on sale throughout the day at the Arena. Our message to fans was to buy your tickets early and get there early,” he said.

“This was a huge tribute to Anthony and given the very significant role he played in the Heineken Cup campaign this season, what a fitting end to his career it proved to be. The event, as such, was a ‘this is your life’ type tribute, with former and current colleagues and coaches appearing to give their insight into Axel’s great career. They included the likes of Peter Clohessy, Shaun Payne, Declan Kidney, Alan Gaffney and, of course, Anthony’s father Brendan,” he said.
