The University of Limerick will be the first university in Ireland to undertake ground-breaking research into the dining habits of the 11,000 students and staff that eat on campus every day.

The research will be conducted as part of MarketPLAN, a bespoke programme developed by one of the world’s largest food companies, ARAMARK.

Speaking at the launch of MarketPLAN last week, Linda Stevens, Director of Plassey Campus Life Services at UL said that “everyday, thousands of people eat in our restaurants on the UL campus”.

“Eating habits and lifestyles are changing and we need to identify emerging trends so that our restaurants and cafes meet the needs of those socialising and eating in them every day. Ultimately MarketPLAN will link campus lifestyle needs with customised food solutions which will yield enhanced services and greater customer satisfaction.”

Donal O’Brien, Commercial Director of ARAMARK Ireland, explained that “over the coming weeks, ARAMARK Ireland will gather the insights of thousands of key stake holders from students, academic staff and administration to help the university understand traffic flow, student, academic and administration staff needs.MarketPLAN will help the university understand the current and future dining needs of the student body and academic staff on campus”.

The launch at UL was attended by Hugo Arnold, one of Ireland’s foremost food experts who writes each week in The Irish Times Magazine and is the author of numerous cookery books.

“As more and more of people eat outside the home on a daily basis, the responsibility will become increasingly weighted on the food industry to ensure they are eating healthily. UL and ARAMARK Ireland are to be commended for this undertaking, which will look in-depth at current eating habits and lifestyle choices and will seek to identify how these can be met in the food service offering on campus,” he said.

Campbell Catering, ARAMARK’s contract catering division, has had a presence at UL for over 23 years and MarketPLAN will be rolled out there in the coming weeks.
