Limerick air passengers will be able to get more taxis to and from Shannon Airport after it was announced that the level of cabs operating at the Mid-West International Airport are to be expanded.

The news of the expansion to taxi fleets, at Shannon Airport was welcomed by Mid-West Minister of State, Tony Killeen.

The Junior Agriculture Minister said he had received confirmation from the Airport Director, Martin Moroney, that, additional permits will shortly be issued following open competition.

According to a statement issued by the Mid-West TD, the 1994 Airport Bye Laws governs the provision and regulation of small public service vehicles at Shannon Airport and this legislation enables the airport to provide its customers with a continuous cab service.

“I am delighted that new permits will be issued. I am informed that Shannon Airport Management made the decision following a recent review of taxi operations. This review included consultation with the Taxi Regulator and Irish Taxi Drivers Federation,” Minister Killeen said.

He also expressed satisfaction that the application process would be open to all valid small public service vehicle driver licence holders.

“Not only is this good news for taxi operators in the area, it will also bring huge benefits to the airport and to those that use it. It is imperative that adequate public transport is provided in response to the continued increases in passenger traffic at the airport”, Minister Killeen said.
