Rallies commemorating the deaths of 11m people including six million Jews are to take place in Limerick City next Wednesday, January 30 marking three quarters of a century since Adolf Hitler began his reign of terror as Chancellor of Germany.
The rallies are been organised by Limerick Socialist Youth who have produced thousands of stickers for people to wear on the day.
The left party are organising the rallies around the country on the theme of ‘Never Again! No to racism and attacks on our democratic rights.’
In Limerick rallies are being organized in the University of Limerick at 1pm and in the city centre at 4pm next Wednesday.
“We are organising these rallies not just to remember those who were killed by the Nazis, but also to draw a line in the sand and say that we will not accept fascism, racism or the ongoing attacks on our democratic rights,” said Cian Prendiville, Limerick Socialist Youth.
“We are also seeking to highlight the hidden story of the crimes of big business in supporting the Nazis. It is well known that (major companies) supplied and serviced machines for the concentration camps,” Mr Prendiville added.
The Limerick Socialist Youth spokesman went on to argue that “the allies” are also very relevant to current issues.
“Recently fascists have attempted to organise in Limerick, putting up viciously racist posters etc. Now Jean-Marie Le Pen, who denies the Holocaust happened, has been invited to speak in UCD under a huge media spotlight,” Mr Prediville said.
“In other countries, such as France, Germany and England neo-Nazis have organised themselves, resulting in Germany having 1,000 reported violent neo-Nazi attacks in 2006. This anniversary is an opportunity to show these fascists that the vast majority of people oppose their bigotry,” he added.
Laura Fitzgerald, National Organiser of the rallies added that racism is a growing issue, and that the rallies can hopefully help combat it.
“Increasingly, racist ideas are being whipped up, with migrant workers being scapegoated for lowering wages. In reality the real culprits are big business in their drive for more profits. Racists try to claim they are the majority, using ‘common sense’. This rally is a chance to show they are wrong, and voice your opposition to racism,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
