The Limerick Citizen Information Service (CIS) is to celebrate 25 years in service tomorrow, Thursday, August 28, with Minister for Defence, Willie O’Dea officiating at the Clarion Hotel Suites on the Ennis Road.
Founded in 1979 by a team of dedicated volunteers, the Limerick CIS first opened its doors to the public in July 1981.
Members provide a free and confidential information and advocacy service to the public on a broad range of civil and social services in Limerick. The first premises were located in the basement of 91 O’Connell Street and were provided by the generosity of the then ITGQU now known as SIPTU. The centre quickly established itself by opening for six sessions a week and dealing with 1,000 queries in the first couple of years by a team of 12 volunteers. The past 25 years has seen tremendous growth and development when in 2007, Limerick CIS dealt with 38,000 queries and 30,000 callers to its centres in the City at 54 Catherine Street and in the County at Kilmallock, Newcastle West, Croom, and Cappamore. Currently the service in Limerick alone includes a Manager and six part-time information officers; 12 FAS community employment personnel and a team of 50 dedicated volunteers. Manager, Marion Browne said that the service is enhanced by the provision of specific services such as free legal advice thanks to the cooperation of local solicitors who volunteer their services. There is also the added benefit of a tax and family finance service with volunteer accountants while facilities are also provided for the Ombudsman’s Office; the National Consumers Association and Threshold.
