Two men were in Garda custody this Tuesday after they were arrested following the attempted armed robbery of a post office in Co Clare and the earlier attempted robbery of another post office in Garryowen in Limerick.
At 9.45 on Tuesday morning two men wearing hoodies and carrying guns entered the post office at Garryowen.
The armed men are understood to have travelled out of Limerick and over the border into Co Clare where they allegedly held up the postmistress in the small village of Clonlara shortly before 11 o’clock. Gardai said the men didn’t get any cash here either however the postmistress was said to have been shaken by the ordeal. It’s understood that when the men were travelling back to Limerick from Clonara, they were then intercepted by an unmarked car carrying an armed Garda detective unit on the Corbally Road, which is a well-known traffic blackspot. Gardai blocked the car as motorists looked on and arrested the two men and at least one firearm was also recovered by Gardai. Both men were taken to separate Garda stations (Mayorstone and Henry Street) where they were being questioned under Section Thirty of the Offences Against The State Act.
It was the second time in a week that Gardai intercepted alleged members of an armed gang who were attempting to steal cash in a heist. In a separate incident seven men were charged on Monday in Dublin District Court with conspiracy to steal nearly €1m after they were arrested outside Tesco in Celbridge in Kildare on Friday morning. |
