THE 2010 Belltable Unfringed Festival brought theatre, music and dance to venues all over the city last week to a positive reaction from local audiences.
From a circus of vegetables to high energy street theatre to delighted crowds on Thomas Street, the varied programme was condensed into five packed days with good audience numbers across the board.
Local writers and performers were heavily represented in shows—‘Spinal Krapp’, ‘Pure Sketchy’ and ‘Rolling’—and performances given by Windings, the Irish Improv Orchestra and Independent Limerick Dancers.
There were also rehearsed readings of ‘Aquero’ by Limerick playwright, Helena Enright and ‘Dos Palabras’ with local company, Amalgamotion.
Cllr Tom Shortt, speaking at the Unfringed Awards on Sunday evening, pointed out that the festival is the first of its kind on the 2010 arts calendar and continues to support local practitioners as well as bring new and innovative productions to the city.
Winners included: Best production for ‘Memory Deleted’; Judges’ Special Award for Elena Bolster for her original play, ‘Beast’; Spirit of the Unfringed for Lords of Strut; Best actress for Medb Lambert for ‘Cleaner and Best Actor for David Heap for ‘Beast’.
Meanwhile, the Belltable Arts Centre received an annual funding offer of €230,000 from the Arts Council this Monday—a cut of around 16% from 2009.
The Belltable welcomed this offer of funding and is pleased that its funding relationship with the Arts Council continues.
Artistic Director, Joanne Beirne, said: “The Belltable acknowledges the extremely difficult ecomonic climate that currently prevails, but it remains committed to the provision of quality artistic experiences for Limerick audiences and will continue support for the artistic community in the city and the wider region using our available resources.”
