The city manager has given a helping hand to bookworms in Caherdavin, Coonagh and Clonmacken by deciding not to transfer the 20 year old Library Sub-Office from Caherdavin Community Centre after appeals by residents and local TDs.

Deputy Peter Power had joined the chorus of local appeals after the city council decided to transfer the popular service to Watch House Cross Library after the recent boundary extension.

The library had previously been maintained by the county council but Deputy Power said this week that Tom Mackey had given him a “commitment that the city council will continue to library on a provisional basis for the foreseeable future”.

“I am pleased to confirm that Mr Mackey has given me an assurance that there will be no immediate closure of the Community Library in the Caherdavin Community Centre. Since being informed by residents in Caherdavin that the library was to close I have been lobbying the city council to retain the library.”

He added that “it is very important that the residents now use this extension to demonstrate their commitment to the city council that a library is needed for the area. Caherdavin residents will have to use it or risk losing it”.

“The city manager, in keeping this service, has demonstrated that the council is willing to work with the new communities and should continue to improve the facilities of the city suburbs. I had assisted the community with funding to renovate the centre and I feel this decision by the council is one of support for the hard work the residents are doing in the area.”
