Vandals in the Castletroy area have destroyed nearly 50 newly planted beech trees in the last three months, costing Limerick County Council over €8,000.

Earlier this week, a contractor removed the trees—most of which were broken on August 29—planted by two roundabouts on the new distributor road.

Senior Engineer Pat O’Neill said that 15 more trees have been broken since November 1 in a “new step for wanton, gratuitous vandalism”.

“The trees around one roundabout were all broken and another is virtually obliterated out of three planting sites in total. The cost of replacing them is over €4,000 and it costs money to have them taken away and disposed of as well as for new planting. We’ve never had vandalism of this extent before,” he said.

He appealed to the public to report any incidents or information to gardaí and revealed that council staff feel so strongly about it that they are doing their own spot checks on the area.

“Everyone is on the lookout but unless someone is caught in the act, it’s very difficult. We’ve had a great response for information but no-one has been arrested or anything. People are pretty sick about it. We have a terrific horticulture department with limited resources and it’s very demoralising.”

Mr O’Neill said that the council was going to look for funds to replace the trees in a defiant stance against whoever was responsible.

“We’re not going to let vandals dictate to us,” Mr O’Neill told the Limerick Independent.
