The heartbroken family of a man who died in hospital on Sunday morning last, a month after he was assaulted in Limerick, have told the Limerick Independent he was the “gentlest of souls” who lived for his greatest passions, his family, life, music and sport. Coonagh-native, Michael Cronin, (41), suffered serious head injuries when he was assaulted on the Hyde Road on May 11.
“This is the hardest blow ever. We’re trying to be strong but it’s incredibly hard. We want people to know he loved where he came from. He was a Coonagh man through and through,” said a family member. Gardai have described the assault on Michael Cronin as tragic. A spokesman said Michael was a totally innocent party. It’s believed the music and sports devotee was hit over the head with a blunt object in a completely unprovoked attack. “Michael was life. He loved music. He was a great entertainer. He played soccer for Coonagh Utd and football for Landsdown Rovers. He also played hurling for Claughaun. He was a Limerick man all the way,” added the family source. Mr Cronin’s family were told by Gardai that Detectives based at Roxboro Road had been awaiting to interview Michael in hospital but he never go a chance to speak to them. However, it’s believed Gardai are making progress in their investigation into the assault on Mr Cronin. The former employee at Careline Removals had been living in Limerick with his partner, Delores, for the past few years. He is also survived by his elder brother Pat and his four sisters, Marianne, Pauline, Anne and Jean.
Anyone who may have witnessed the attack on Michael Cronin or who may have information are asked to contact Gardai at Roxboro Road on 061-21434. A ost mortem has proved inconclusive as to the cause of Mr Cronin’s death. “We have had a number of conferences on the matter and we are actively pursuing lines of enquiry into what happened. Our thoughts are with his family,” said a Garda spokesperson. |
