Alan Meehan, managing director, AutoXchange Alan Meehan, managing director of AutoXchange, hit the national headlines last week when he played the Good Samaritan for a couple whose motoring dreams were shattered by thieves.
Mr Meehan, who presides over AutoXchange garages in Limerick, Cork, Galway and Naas, gave a free Ford Mondeo worth over €5,000 to a dad-to-be who had his life savings stolen by brazen thieves.
Brendan O’Connor had driven to the bank in the car that he was about to buy, so that he could collect his €5,4000 life savings in order to pay for the vehicle.
Unfortunately, Mr O’Connor then parked the car outside his work in Goatstown, and thieves broke in and made off with the cash.
Mr O’Connor and his partner are expecting their first child in less than a month’s time.
And on hearing the story about the misfortunes the couple, Alan Meehan felt that he had no choice but to help.
“I had to help this man and his partner,” the AutoXchange boss said.
“They are about to have a new baby, and then someone goes and nicks all the money they had saved for a car,” he added.
“I hope this goes a little along the way to making the birth of their first child the happiest possible day,” he said.
Thanks to Alan’s generosity, the couple now have the family car that they had always wanted — a 2001 reg Ford Mondeo, worth more than €5,000.
Brendan told the Irish Sun last week: “This is unbelievable. I don’t know what to say… this is bound to cheer the missus up no end.”
Alan Meehan though was simply glad to be able to help a couple hit by unfortunate circumstances.
“I just thought this would be a kind thing to do at a time of economic doom and gloom,” Alan explained.
