THE new car market seems to be on the rebound according to reports from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), which showed a 38% increase in new cars for February compared with February 2009. A total of 12,325 new cars were registered in February compared with 8,950 in February 2009.
Toyota edged ahead of Ford for the month, despite the huge negative publicity surrounding the recall of many models. Ford however held the lead for the year to date.
The government funded scrappage scheme is having a positive impact, according to sources within the motor industry. Some, including Renault chief executive in Ireland, Eric Bissett feels however that it is overly restrictive, which is slowing its uptake.
Many in the motor industry are expecting the increase in sales to continue into March as more and more new car buyers see the benefits of the scrappage scheme value on offer.
