MAZDA has introduced a new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, which will be fitted in the first instance in the new Mazda6 car. This new engine is claimed to deliver extra power with low emissions and low consumption. This new engine will be offered in three power derivatives to meet the needs of a wide range of diesel customers in Europe. The baseline low power engine produces 125hp at 3,500 rpm and 310 Nm of torque at 1,800 to 2,600 rpm. It is rated to use only 5.5 litres (saloon and hatchback) and 5.6 litres (wagon) of fuel per 100 km in the combined driving cycle. The CO2 emission level is a low of 147g/km for saloon and hatchback models. The mid power engine produces 163bhp at 3,500 rpm and 360 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm. It uses only 5.5 litres of diesel per 100 km in the combined driving cycle for the saloon and hatchback models. The CO2 emission rating is the same as the lower power unit at 147g/km. The top rated engine in the range produces 185bhp at 3,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm. The fuel consumption level is the same as the lowest power model at only 5.6 litres per 100 km in the combined cycle. And the CO2 rating is just 149g/km, which is impressive for such a powerful diesel engine. This new engine uses a new common-rail fuel system with injectors that have 10 spray holes (instead of the 6 used on the 2.0-litre Mazda diesel engine). The fuel system operates at a very high pressure level and this combined with higher- response solenoid systems deliver more engine power with low emissions. The compression ratio in this engine is lower than that of a regular diesel engine at 16.3:1. And Mazda claims that this helps lower fuel consumption. The valve system in the new engine is a front chain drive system, while the engine structure is made from a new form of aluminium for greater efficiency due to lower levels of friction. The lower power Mazda 2.0 litre turbo-diesel engine will remain in the Mazda6 range for the foreseeable future.
