The humble spud has taken to the highways and byways of Ireland transported courtesy of Land Rover.

Agri Aware’s Meet the Spuds! road show, in conjunction with the International Year of Potato (IYP) committee, will visit over a dozen farming and food festivals during the summer and autumn.

It will highlight the cultural, historical and nutritional importance of Ireland’s favourite vegetable, the potato.

The road show will encompass a number of different activities including potato-growing demonstrations, potato quizzes with spot prizes and guest talks from potato farmers in the locality of the chosen festivals.

Information will be distributed on the seasonal varieties, potato recipes and nutritional characteristics of the spud; a helping hand will also be available for consumers who may have queries about growing their own varieties.

The Road Show is part of Agri Aware’s Meet the Spuds! Potato Growing Challenge currently taking place in primary schools nationwide.

Over 100,000 children are registered and growing a variety called the ‘Colleen’; the potatoes will be harvested in early June and selected winners will receive €10,000 to start or further develop a school garden.

Schools from different regions will be invited to embark on a special spud adventure during the festivals in June and September and will learn about the growth of the potato from the Great Famine to 21st agriculture.

Land Rover Ireland has presented a Discovery 3 Commercial to Agri Aware to ensure that the road show reaches all its destinations.
