UK-BASED road safety experts are planning to remove thousands of street signs in an attempt to persuade motorists to drive more slowly by confusing them.
Traffic engineers are considering an initiative known as ‘naked streets’. It entails not only removing signs but also lines on the road. It means that cars, pedestrians and cyclists have to ‘share’ the road with each other. That it is believed, makes drivers and pedestrians far more cautious than they would be otherwise. Such practices are already common the continent, particularly in the Dutch town of Drachten where removing signs and lights has resulted in a decline in road crash casualties. |
