Corbally is choking to death! This may sound a tad dramatic but its true and as a resident of Westbury, Corbally I’m sick of having to travel in my car every morning and evening along the only thoroughfare known to Corbally residents as the road to hell.
Traffic is a nightmare across the city but Limerick can now proudly claim its very own ‘mini M50’.
Who’s to blame for the tailbacks? Who is to blame for the painful snail’s pace at which I find myself driving along the Corbally Road every morning to work?
We might first look at Limerick’s planners, the men and women who design and plan how many houses are built in Limerick and how many roads are built to service the people. But it would be wrong to solely target the planners.
It is Government at national level who allocate grants for roads and infrastructure. If the Government thinks the Corbally Road and its surrounding housing constitutes good planning, they have lost their senses.
The present situation is driving motorists crazy every day and the excuses are wearing thin.
Corbally’s design is akin to a scene from the 1986 fantasy film ‘Labyrinth’.
Who thought it would be a good idea to provide only one main road for thousands of people travelling in their cars to and from County Clare, Westbury, Shannon Banks taking in the Corbally National School (don’t get me started), Park Gardens, the Old Mill Road, Irish Estates, Grove Island and finally past the lights at St Mary’s Church.
What’s more annoying still is the so-called Corbally link road known as the ‘Pa Healy Road’, which was promised would deliver motorists from our traffic frustrations. But this road has made the problem worse—yes, worse.
Corbally is choking, and I challenge those in power to start loosening the noose before we all go doo-lally!
