For once I am happy to start this week with praise… and in bucketfuls.

I have never had recourse to summon the fire brigade for assistance. But last week a neighbour rang me to say that a car was on fire outside my front gate.

Within minutes a fire crew was on the scene and had the blaze under control in their usual high standard manner.

Apparently the car had been set alight by two people who allegedly had stolen two chainsaws from a nearby store.

In panic, they drove into the cul-de-sac where I live, and set the car ablaze.
But it was after the burnt out shell of a very costly car had been removed that the fire crew really came into their own.

Instead of packing up and leaving they carried out a total clean-up. They left the place cleaner than when they arrived and it was a job very well done.

Within minutes, too, the Gardai from Roxboro were on the scene. Within two minutes they had found the chainsaws which had been thrown into trees.

And having suggested that the duo might return for their loot that night the Gardai were on hand to intercept them when they did so.

Are Limerick 37 wise to go ahead with their very ambitious plans to develop Jackman Park? It is almost 60 years since I first read of a mooted state of the art stadium for the site of the Quarry in Prospect. Nothing happened and in the intervening years there was no need for such a stadium once the departure from the Markets Field took place.

Not having been invited, or notified, or sent a copy of a press release I am taking at face value what a friend told me of the proposals. Apparently upwards of €1 million is to be spent on upgrading the venue.

The aim is to provide a 6,000 seater stadium. My mind goes back a few years ago when something similar was promised for Hogan Park Again nothing happened..

The Limerick Independent revealed last year that a new stand is to be erected at the Station side of the ground and modern day facilities to cater for televison and media are to be provided.

I welcome any development that will further advance soccer in the city. But I am told that it is hoped that the proposed development might also bring international football to the venue.

I presume this refers to, at best, under 21 games. The attendance at Limerick 37’s games averages 500.

How many more are likely to turn out to see the Irish under 21’s-without possibly a local player on view-take to the pitch against Israel, Poland and many other countries.

Ireland v Brazil or Argentina might bring extra support.
