But with Thomond Park progressing well and the Gaelic Grounds never being full to capacity I just wonder are the facilities becoming too attractive for all codes.

Apart from Heineken Cup games and internationals Thomond Park will never be packed to capacity.

Nor will, I predict, the new Jackman Park which at present is a comfortable, city centre location.

And don’t forget that the Irish Greyhound Board have promised a new world class greyhound stadium for the former Greenpark racecourse. Live long enough and you may just survive to witness the opening!

Where, oh where, are all the supporters to emerge from to make all these lavish venues profitable?.

It was sad to see Ireland go out of the rugby world cup at such an early stage. Rarely have I heard so much criticism for a sporting failure.

I know of one young man who travelled from Brazil to support the team. Like thousands of others he had spent a large amount of money and he believes the team did not deliver.

The inquests into what happened in all the games are in full flight. In many instances the criticism is coming from those who never stood on a rugby pitch in their lives.

Limerick rugby supporters are known the world over for their behaviour and sportsmanship. Where else in the world do referees get such assistance from spectators.

Many of those on duty for Ireland on Sunday have Limerick connections.

I urge all local supporters when they meet the players to welcome them home, speak kindly to them and remember that nobody in the entire make-up of the Irish representatives deliberately underperformed.

It is, after all, a sport.

The failure is bitterly disappointing but nobody died and let’s just get on with our sporting life.

Before leaving the World Cup I cannot but remark on the fact that the early morning sport on RTE came for the past few weeks from Michael Corcoran in France.

Why had the overworked Michael to carry this extra burden?
Obviously what was happening at home had to be e-mailed to him in the early morning.

Why did the person who sent the e-mail not present the programme from Montrose and call the splendid Michael into the programme rather than doing things the other way round?

And a word of appreciation, too, to Setanta Sports for their excellent coverage and to Limerickman, Conor McNamara for his commentary and fellow Limerickman, Brian Toland for his contributions as well as former Munster player, Rob Henderson.
