Scouting History 1950

During the mid 1950s, changes had to be made to the Constitution and Rules of CBSI because of legal requirements. The revised book was immediately known as the "Grey Book" because of the colour of its covers and was not regarded as much of an improvement to its predecessor.

The first national training course had twenty six scout leaders in attendance and was held in Larch Hill. The following districts provided the numbers for the course Limerick 7, Cork 6, Belfast 5, Dublin 3, Sligo 2, Waterford 2 and Mayo 1. The first issue of the Scout Leader was published its aim was to communicate information from headquarters to scout leaders throughout the country. The Chief Scout for the Scout Association of Ireland was Lord Powerscourt (1949 – 1965) and for the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland was Professor Joseph B Whelehan (1930 – 1962).

Scouting Limerick

This weekly column (which of course would not happen without the support of the Limerick Independent who has provided the space on a weekly base) has increased the Scouting profile within our Scout County. Information, reports etc being passed on through the column has been well accepted over the last twelve months not only by ourselves in scouting but also the general public.
