Scouting History: 1930s
In the United Kingdom, the first parade of Kings Scouts takes place at Windsor Castle, reviewed by King George the fifth, followed by the first National Scout Service in a tradition that continues today for Queen Scout Award holders. Chief Scout for the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland was Senator John O’Neill (1927-1930) followed by Professor Joseph B Wheelahan (1930-1962). By the end of 1930, CBSI was established in all four provinces and in almost every parish in Belfast, Cork, Dublin and Limerick. The first official CBSI pilgrimage to Lourdes was held in September 1930, today leaders from within the Limerick Scout County still keep the tradition going. 1934 saw over 600 CBSI members attend a pilgrimage to Rome where an audience with Pope Pius XI was the highlight.
