Hospice unit for County hospital remains on track

THE chairman of the Friends of St Ita’s said that the fundraising group is “still very optimistic and positive” that the €2.5m cancer hospice unit at the Newcastle West hospital will open in 2009 despite reports to the contrary.
 
Man arrested after Castleconnell armed robbery

THE Limerick Independent has learned that Gardaí recovered a car and arrested a man on Monday for questioning about an armed robbery on Castleconnell Post Office last Wednesday.
A silver Toyota Celica car, which Gardaí believe was used by the gang, was found partially burnt out in Raheen.
 
Limerick roads claim 18th life

A THIRTY-year old man became the 18th person to lose their life on roads in Limerick so far this year, following a three-vehicle collision near Banogue last Wednesday.
The victim named locally as Paul Lynch, a well-known plumber, from Kilrush Road, Ennis died when his car was involved in a crash just outside the village on the main Limerick-Cork Road.
Mr Lynch was killed instantly when the car he was travelling in was in a collision with two trucks.
 
‘Smart Ass’ board game put in its box over ‘Stab City’ slur on Limerick

A WORLDWIDE games corporation has told the Limerick Independent newspaper that it is to remove a reference to Limerick as ‘Stab City’ from the next version of one its biggest selling games, which was named ‘Game of the Year 2007’ by the Australian Games Association.
A spokesperson for University Games Corporation in England said that the American creators of ‘Smart Ass’ were not aware that ‘Stab City’ was a term of offence.
“I believe the game was created by our company in the US and I understand they were not aware it was an offensive term to use. I understand that the term will be removed from the next version of the game,” the spokesperson said.
The controversy began when a family from Fedamore in County Limerick were playing the game at home when they saw the ‘stab city’ reference to Limerick on the so-called learning board game for children and adults.
 
Support sought for Concern fast

A LIMERICK volunteer working in Haiti for the charity, Concern, has appealed for local people to take part in the Concern Christmas Campaign through either the Concern Fast on December 4 or by buying a Concern Christmas Gift for someone this year.
Today there are nearly one billion people in the world who are starving and every seven days 120,000 children die from hunger and malnutrition—a sum which is more than the entire population of Limerick city and county.

LIMERICK celebrated its third year as a Fairtrade City last Saturday, urging local people to ‘Have a Fairtrade Christmas’.
Mayor John Gilligan helped to mark the occasion at the city library, presenting prizes to local primary and secondary school students who entered a poster competition to promote the ethical brand this festive season.
