LIMERICK Sinn Féin is launching a local advertising campaign to
encourage local people to make reports to the confidential ‘Dial to
Stop Drug Dealing’ phone line on Freephone 1800-220220.
Local spokesman, Maurice Quinlivan, described: “the delay” in the roll out to Limerick of the service as “inexplicable”.
“This initiative was successfully piloted in the Blanchardstown area of
Dublin more than two years ago. Recently rolled out in the greater
Dublin area the freephone number is already proving to be quite
successful. The Gardaí claim they have had substantial success in
seizing drugs as a result of information received on the non-Garda
phone line,” he said.
“From a total of more than 450 calls [nationally] in the first month,
it says it has received a total of 141 informative reports many of
which had led to a significant number of arrests and a major drugs
seizure.”
