Abandoned car may be a vital murder probe clue

ONE major possible investigation lead in this murder probe is the discovery of a burnt out car, which was found by Gardai shortly after Shane Geoeghan’s brutal killing.
The vehicle is a lead that Gardai are not prepared to give up on and senior Gardai heading up the murder investigation have made another appeal for information about the Renault Espace car.
 
Health campaigners to picket Cowen’s Thomond Park visit

THE Campaign for a Real Public Health Service (CRPHS) is planning to 'greet' the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, with a protest when he comes to Limerick to officially open Thomond Park next Tuesday (November 18).
 
With recession biting, Limerick reflects on 63% jobless increase

THE latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show that unemployment in Limerick has seen as rise of four and a half thousand people in one year-an increase of 63%.
Limerick Sinn Féin North Ward representative Maurice Quinlivan has said that the increase by 4,594 highlights the Government’s “inaction on job creation”.
The latest figures show that unemployment has risen in Limerick from 7,286 to 11,880 since October 2007.
 
Lomu to switch on lights

ALL Blacks rugby legend, Jonah Lomu, will switch on Limerick’s Christmas lights as part of several days of celebrations intended to ‘paint the town red’ in honour of Thomond Park’s opening.
The first global superstar of rugby union will join Mayor John Gilligan and the people of Limerick at 5pm on November 17, the eve of the eagerly anticipated Zurich challenge clash between Munster and New Zealand at the newly expanded Limerick Stadium.
 
Breen makes a timely return to his old stomping ground

CELEBRATED playwright, John Breen, will return to old school, St Enda’s Community School, this Friday to see a special performance of his play ‘Alone it Stands’ ahead of the historic Munster V All Black’s game next week.
The play about the original 1978 rugby match—which has toured internationally to great acclaim—will be staged specially for staff, students and supporters of the school.
New principal of St Enda’s, Gina O’Connor, said she is delighted at the prospect of this unique event and the school is extremely proud at the accomplishment John has achieved since he graduated.
 
Garda digital comms delayed until 2010

IT will be 2010 before Gardai in Limerick are given a digital radio communications system, which will hamper criminals listening to communications between members of the force.
The confirmation that the rollout of the secure MDRS system will not happen for another two years came in reply to a question put to the Minster for Justice in the Dail on behalf of Limerick Sinn Fein North Ward candidate, Maurice Quinlivan.
 
Grim confirmation of the loss of 183 jobs to local economy

AFTER two-weeks of speculation surrounding the future of jobs at Raheen based companies Flextronics and RR Donnelley Turnkey Solutions, 183 jobs are to be cut between both plants.
On Sunday Flextronics confirmed that it would be seeking 118 redundancies at its warehousing facility, which is a leading sub-supplier to Dell Computers.
The job layoffs were confirmed to workers following a meeting with SIPTU representatives, who had been negotiating a redundancy package with Flextronics for the past number of weeks.
The company had signalled that it was seeking to make around 100 of its 290 workers redundant because it was embarking on a restructuring programme brought on by the global economic downturn.

Limerick political figures hit out at Harney on cancer vaccination

LIMERICK public representatives have slammed the Minister for Health and Children and called for her to reverse the decision to put plans for a cervical cancer vaccination scheme for young girls on hold.
Cllr Jim Long said that he is “in a state of complete shock and disgust at the decision by our Government to withdraw from the promised roll-out of the vaccination program from the end of this year”.

A FINE Gael county councillor has harshly criticised the fact that 4,599 primary school children across Limerick are in classes of over 30 as the local authority calls for the education minister to resign.
