Mungret have jumped from bottom place to second in Group One to claim a place in the quarter-finals of the Paudie Ryan Catering Intermediate Hurling Championship.

Their dramatic rise through the ranks came courtesy of a fine 2-16 to 1-12 win over Mungret at Claughaun. This represented Mungret's only points of the preliminary stages of the championship but was enough to earn them second spot in the group, ahead of Ballybricken and Ballybrown on points difference. Denis Giltenane was in superb form for Mungret, knocking over ten smashing points. Mungret, junior hurling champions of two years ago, now advance to a quarter-final meeting with South Liberties.

Pole position in Group One was booked by Knockaderry, who collected their third win of the season with a tasty 1-18 to 1-12 victory over Ballybricken at Mungret. Ballybrown, All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Finalists way back in 1989, suddenly find themselves seriously threatened by relegation.

Liberties preserved their unbeaten run in the campaign with 1-11 apiece draw with Pallasgreen at Caherconlish. That outcome earned Liberties top spot in Group Two but ended Pallasgreen's interest in the championship as Glenroe, 1-17 to 2-8 winners over Monaleen, clinched the second promotional spot. Monaleen are now in danger of dropping down to junior grade.

Glenroe will run-up against Kildimo in another quarter-final of the championship.

Kildimo clinched second spot in Group Three with a 0-12 apiece draw with Hospital Herbertstown at Ballingarry. The result earned Kildimo their third point of the championship and second place, behind Newcastle West, in Group Three. Newcastle West lost their final outing to Cappamore at Kilmallock's Fitzgerald Park, 0-15 to 1-10, but still topped their section on scoring difference. Hospital/Herbertstown are the side that have now dropped into the relegation zone.

The crucial clash of leading contenders Bruff and Caherline in Group Four was postponed at the weekend, and is now likely to go ahead within the next fortnight. Both teams are already through to the last eight and what's only up for grabs is positions in the group. Pointless Killeedy overcame Patrickswell at Newcastle West, an outcome that earns the former senior kingpins a lifeline in the intermediate ranks.

IHC quarter-finals: Newcastle West v Bruff/Caherline; Mungret v South Liberties, Cappamore v Bruff/Caherline and Glenroe v Knockaderry.
