A DOZEN years ago or so, Dromcollogher/Broadford were a struggling novice football club but these days the West Limerick outfit are the kings of the sport on Shannonside, following their complete demolition of holders Ballylanders (2-15 to 1-8) in the Live 95FM sponsored senior final at the Gaelic Grounds. It represented a fourth title for the winners since the arrival of the new Millennium, and certainly atoned for last season’s heavy final defeat to the same opposition. Unquestionably, it establishes Dromcollogher/Broadford as the rightful holders of the title of Limerick Team of the Decade. Although, the victors were deserving of their comfortable win, they were forced to recover from a horrendous start. A blunder in defence led to Kieran O’Callaghan slipping home a gift of a goal while jumped Ballylanders into an early 1-1 to nil advantage. From maybe the arrival of the second-quarter onwards, Dromcollogher/Broadford began to express themselves and were only a solitary point adrift at the interval, 1-6 to 0-8. Wind-assisted in the closing half, Dromcollogher/Broadford were unstoppable, with Mícheál Reidy (0-8), Garrett Noonan (1-2), Seanie Buckley (1-1) and the evergreen Ray Lynch (0-3) all delivering timely scores. That the new champions limited their challengers to just two points in the final half was down to great policing by the returning Tommy Stack, Jason Stokes, Pat Donnelly and inspirational captain Tom McLoughlin. Dromcollogher/Broadford progress to play either Nemo Rangers (Cork) or the Kerry representatives at the semi-final stage of the AIB Munster Championship at Pairc na nGael on Sunday November 23rd. |
