A direct entry into the semi-finals of the ESB Munster Minor Football Championship is on offer to Limerick should they overcome holders Cork in tonight’s (Wednesday) opening round fixture at Newcastle West, 6.30pm.

Anything other that victory will result in an arduous journey through a cumbersome combination of games via the back-door system to arrive at the penultimate stage of a championship they last won way back in 1956.

While the visiting side will obviously start the outing as the firmest of favourites, there is every belief about that John Colbert’s young guns are causing a significant upset, and follow-on from their first round wins of the last couple of seasons. A year ago, Limerick were too strong for Clare at the first hurdle and were unlucky against Kerry next day out, very unlucky at that.

Around half-a-dozen players from ’07 are still around a year later, and form the nucleus of the Limerick set-up.

A couple of seasons back, Limerick and Cork County went head-to-head in the Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel Munster U16 Final at Askeaton, with the rebels prevailing by only a few points after a terrific battle.

One of the most high profile new entries into the Limerick scene is Seamus O’Carroll of Cappagh, nowadays a senior handballer of note and who only a short few years ago was the world champion at his age level over in Canada.  Another dual-star is Jamie Richardson (Claughaun), who was yesterday penciled-in to line-out for Limerick CBS in their attempt to retain the Dr. Tony O’Neill Cup (All-Ireland Senior Boys Soccer) against Salesian College of Celbridge at Buckley Park, Kilkenny.

Others in the panel are the exceptional talent that is Cormac Joyce-Power (Ahane) and Darragh Bonfil of Monaleen, who were both key performers as Castletroy College stunned the rugby world to lift the Avonmore Milk Munster Schools Senior Cup rugby title last month.

Paraic McEnery of county champions Fr Casey’s is chosen as team captain, with his twin Eoin also in the squad.  Pat Begley, a younger brother of Brian, is the third generation of the Begley Family to participate at inter-county football, following in the footsteps of his dad, also Pat, and grandfather, who both were regulars with their native Clare in times past.  Begley is attached to Mungret/St. Paul’s, who are also represented by Laurence Kelly, Jack Walsh and Michael Cussen.
