It’s the only chance of silverware for Limerick this season – after a year that promised so much it’s now left to Gerry Molyneaux’s intermediate side to salvage something when they run-up against favourites Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Final at Semple Stadium, Thurles on Saturday next (3.30pm).

“Only for us, there would have been nothing going on for the last six weeks – the GAA in Limerick would have been shut down at the inter-county level,” declared the Limerick manager at one of his team’s last training sessions at the beautifully manicured Gaelic Grounds at the outset of the week.  “We have a good team, a very good team and many of them are players that are more than capable of making the breakthrough into the senior team for next year.

“These are players, at least 12 or 13 of them anyway from a panel of 24 and six alternates, of making a name for themselves with Limerick at the highest level over the next six years.  That is why it is so important for this second-string Limerick side to put up a good showing against Kilkenny, and more importantly come away from Thurles with a much-needed win for Limerick hurling.

“Nothing is ever easy against Kilkenny and this is going to be no different.  They are very strong, with good defenders and very stylish forwards.  If we are to win our forwards will have to become backs for the entire hour, certainly based on what I saw of Kilkenny in their Leinster Final against Dublin and again against Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final, both games which went to extra-time and in which Kilkenny showed plenty of energy and freshness.”

Added skipper Alan O’Connor of Ballybrown: “Okay, to many it’s just an intermediate final but it’s really a lot more than that to Limerick, and to most of us involved and hoping to make it back onto the senior squad.  An All-Ireland title for Limerick, no matter what grade, would be huge to Limerick and personally I’m fairly confident.  Obviously, Kilkenny are no bad team but ten years ago we managed to beat them in a final at the same venue and it would be oh so sweet to repeat the dose.”
