The first major sweepstake of the year, the Limerick Brakes Kennedy Cup, got underway at the Markets Field on Monday and a quality entry has been received which guarantees top class racing over the next few weeks. The eventual winner will receive €5,200.

Last Saturday the semi-finals of three sweeps were run and in an A5 the fastest winner was Cunning Devil who had a comfortable six lengths win in 28.62. Liam Mann’s, Faha Scholes (2) was fast away and looked a likely winner at one stage. However he had to be content with second spot when holding off Colored Cash (4), owned by the Silver Fox syndicate of Shannon and trained by Denis P O’Malley, by a short head

Joe Williams from Rathkeale sent in the other heat winner when his Satans Boy (Tucks Mein-Shaunas Flash) made all from trap three and was a two lengths winner in 28.97 from Michael Roche’s, Welcome Return (6) who was a similar distance in front of Unbridled Mini (2), owned by John Murphy from Patrickswell.

Times were almost identical in the two semi-finals of a novice 2. Marginally fastest was Quick Home (2), owned by Kevin O’Toole of Charleville. She led from the second bend and went on impressively for a three and a half lengths win in 29.49 from Bucks Gringo, owned by Gerard O’Reilly of Newport who was a length and a half in front of the reserve in trap one, Cant Miss Out, owned by the Four Legs syndicate.

The other heat provided an all County Clare 1-2-3. In the fastest of the novice 700 sweep winners, Clounmoveen Lad (6) swept to a fourteen lengths win in 39.30. The Neilus O’Connell, Fedamore, trained and Mrs. Mary McNamara owned, Knocktoo Dee (2), despite being baulked, came through to be second.

In the other heat, Kyle Ballerina (1), owned by Michael J Field of Patrickswell, led at the fourth bend but had to be content with second place. Bangers Vieri (Droopys Vieri-Local Susie), owned by Declan Reale came with a strong late run to score by half a length in 39.66 with More Bale (4), owned by Cal J O’Donnell from Kilmallock, who was baulked at the second bend, third.

There was a most impressive racing debut in an S4 over 300 yards by Billy Guiney’s, Ballygibba Mac (Nod Mac-Sings Of Gold) who made all from trap one for a three and a half lengths win in 16.33 and Banker (Hondo Black-Savana Woods), trained by Denis P O’Malley for the Keep It Country syndicate from Bruff, made all to take the D1 over 700 yards from the Neilus O’Connell trained and Patrick Fitzgerald, Croom, owned Ballycahane Sky (4).

There was plenty of sweepstake action, too, on Thursday. There was a very tight finish to the A3 semi-final in which the Denis P O’Malley trained and Paddy Gallagher, Limerick City, owned, Carnaree Scholes (6) was beaten a short head by the 29.16 winner with Back For Gold (1), four lengths behind, third.

Mrs. Mary Crotty from O’Briens Bridge sent in Inislosky Rook (Hotshow Ben-Countrywide Star), to take the other heat when finishing well to beat the longtime pacemaker, Noels Nell (1), owned by Ms Laurianne Carmody, by three lengths with Hes So Keen (5) a similar distance back for Ms Mary Quinn and Ms Kay Enright from Clarina.

Ms Buttons (3), owned by Master John Hayes, was second in her heat of an A4 in which Joe Brazill’s, Kilmallock, Scala Honcho (3) was third and the other heat was won by Shesoddsagainst.
