Two successful fundraising meetings were held at the weekend and interest is building for the Cari meeting, the one that is deserving of the highest possible support.

Shannon Rugby Club's big night on Thursday to raise funds for their youth development programme was very well supported.

Included on the 11-race card were the semi-finals of the Fr Ryan Memorial A3 Sweep, the final of which will be held this Thursday, with €2,400 for the winner in the Staker Wallace GAA Club Benefit Meeting.

Barring upsets, the prize seems at the mercy of Lughill Glen who has dominated in every round. Croom owner, Michael Purtill, hopes that his Tarbrook Henry can upset the form. He was second all the way, beaten nine lengths by Lughill Glen, in the fastest of the semi-finals, in 28.62 The one most likely to offer strongest opposition to the favourite, though, is Shaneboy Nadal (Hondo Black-Shaneboy Ruth).

Owned by Denis Kiely in Kilmallock, Shaneboy Nadal, like Lughill Glen, is unbeaten in the event. In the semi-final he was out of trap one speedily, led at the first bend, and made every yard, with the highly regarded Praematurus (unbeaten in his previous five races for Tarbert trainer Pat O'Connor), having to be content with third place.

There was an impressive winner in the Roadbridge and Clareview Motors-sponsored A2—Topflight Askina (Come On Lleyton-Topflight Jeff), owned by the Top Flight syndicate of Drombane, scored by three parts of a length from the Neilus O'Connell-trained Limerick Dalt (4), who was having the 67th race of his career.

In the Brennans Bread A6, Pat O'Connor's Rocking Rolo (Knockabout Wok-Getaway Jordan), trained in Drombanna by Denis P O'Malley, made all from one for a seven lengths win in 29.17 from Ide Reidy's Jitterbug Jive (4).
