One of the most exciting finishes ever seen at the Markets Field, or any other track, was witnessed by a big crowd on Saturday night. The verdicts in a mini open sweep semi-final were a head, a head, a short head, a head and two lengths.

But the main attraction was the final of the Irish Cambridgeshire over 700 yards and which was won by three lengths in 38.87 by the favourite, Barnagrane Brian for Paudie O’Keeffe of Tullylease.

But that dramatic finish to the Guys And Dolls semi-final provided the main talking point with the James Roche trained, Amigan Girl (Tucks Mein-Blondie White), who was fast away, just holding off Endless Wood (2), owned by Miss Allison Quinn in Pallaskenry and who did not start all that well but put in a strong finish. Another neck behind was William Houlihan’s, Cullane Magpie (6). Amigan Girl won in 29.06.

The other semi-final was won in 28.81.

There was a marvellous run in an A4 sweep semi-final in which James Kelly’s, Gurtnacrehy Icon (Droopys Vieri-Cameron Liz) showed best early pace from trap two. He went on to make all from Joe Mangan’s, Crecora, owned, Banbas Duv (4) who also started well but was beaten six lengths by the 28.81 winner.

In the other heat Mrs. Helen Cussen of Charleville supplied the winner when her Linares (Droopys Kewell-Rings A Chime) led early on from trap five and made all for a one lengths win in 29.03 with Michael Murphy’s, Corcass Celt (3) a long way back but safely into the final on Saturday.

John Behan from Loughmill won the €620 when his He’s A Winner (Daves Mentor-Spooky Blondie) won a thrilling A5 final by a neck in 29.17.

Dawnski Ritchie (4) led the way early on in an A6 final, which proved a messy affair. Sharons Own (3) was baulked on the run-up, Lubagh Sailor (1) was baulked at the first and fourth bends while Coolanoran Jack (2), owned by Kevin Supple, was wide at the fourth bend. Sharons Own finished best to beat Coolanoran Jack by five and a half lengths in 29.46 with Billy Murphy’s, Coolready County (5) being three parts of a length behind, third.

The Irish Friendship syndicate from Ballyagran, Kilmallock, owned, Friendship Harry (Broadway Johnny-Teds Glory) was always in front in an open 300 and scored by a length and a half in 16.82 from Patsy McCarthy’s, Adare (2) who was half a length in front of Jack McGann’s, Mat The Rasher (6).

There was a good run in an A0 over 700 yards by the Denis P O’Malley trained, Banker (Hondo Black-Savana Woods) who made all from trap three for a six lengths win in 39.05 for the Keep It Country syndicate from Bruff with Patrick Fitzgerald’s, Croom, owned Ballycahana Sky (1), a length and a half behind, third.
