The biggest event of the year at the Markets Field is just around the corner. Entries close next Monday for the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St. Leger which again this year will have a cheque for €35,000 for the winner on Saturday, June 14th.

On Monday night there was a big crowd to support the annual meeting to raise funds for Cari and next Saturday Young Munster rugby club will be expecting a big crowd for their benefit fixture.

Several sweep finals will be run as part of that meeting and local owner, Michael Murphy will be doubly represented in the novice 3 which has €700 for the winner.

Litter sisters, Corcass Babe and Corcass Spark (Bucks Honcho-Valleyview Lass) both won their heats. The former made all from trap one when beating Timothy Hanley’s, Garrydoolis, Oyster Moon (3) by half a length in 29.61.

It was a very tight finish in the other heat in which Mary McNamara’s, Christys Lass (1) and Corcass Spark (2) had a great battle all the way with the latter making all to win by a head in 29.76.

The A8 final will also have €700 for the winner and promises to be a close affair as less than a length separated the winners on the clock. Best of them was Miss Mairead Casey’s, Tucks Chloe (Tucks Mein-Ardant Chloe). She flew from trap five and every yard in front for an eleven lengths win in 29.11 which was a splendid effort. Ballinulty Code (3), owned by Michael Reale, was second when finishing well.

Sprucehill Rosie (5) came through late to win the other heat in 29.17 and Master Aaron Murphy’s, A Right Druid (2) was second.

The Pat O’Connell trained and Dominic Ryan and Martin Hartnett owned, Builders Express (Brett Lee-Beaming Heart) gave a fabulous performance in the A3 semi-final when having a ten lengths win in 28.46 from trap one. No Fee (5) was second for Ms Fiona Hartnett from Abbeyfeale and in the other heat Steeple Rd Roco (2) was three lengths behind the 28.80 winner for Dan Wren of Tarbert and Roger Sheehy’s, Kilmallock, Fort Boss (4) also qualified.

Adare owner, Richard Savage, sent in Parkside Jack (Honcho Classic-Parkside Gem) to win the A4. He led from the second bend and went away for a five lengths win in 29.05 from Dan Shanahan’s, Claires Yaris (3).

The highlight of the Staker Wallace GAA club benefit on Thursday was the final of the Fr. Ryan Memorial A3 which saw Lughill Glen once again being successful. Shaneboy Nadal (3), owned in Kilmallock by Denis Kiely, led at the first and second bends but was passed by Lughill Glen and finished second when two lengths adrift in a race won in 28.59.

Michael O’Sullivan from Knocklomng  has had many a winner in the past 70 years or so but the manner in which his Derby Gael (Ballymac maeve-Saleen Dawn) scored in the A9 at this particular meeting will have given him great satisfaction. He won by nine lengths in a superb 28.91 from Mrs. Bridget Danaher’s, Doon, Glengar Alfred (1).

Kilmallock owner, Callaghan Corkery took the novice 3 when his Selinas Express (Tucks Mein-Selinas Friend) made all in 29.41 and Denis Shanahan from Shanagolden won the novice 2 when Dark Slaney (Sineads Slaney-Vieri Easy) led from the second bend to score in 29.43.

Cuntas Miosuil (Top Honcho-Redhot Princess) took the A2 for Shane Curtin of Tournafulla when hitting the front at the end of the back straight and scored in 29.50 and Miss Nicola Irwin’s, Hilltop Ronaldo (Honcho Classic-Silver Helen) won the A6 in 29.80.

There was success, too, for Pat Willmott when Keen Cross (Blackjack Tom-Moody Julia) won the S2 over 300 yards and Noel Ryan’s, Puddle Buster (Droopys Scholes-Lemon United) took the S8in 16.64.
