Planning permission for the proposed new stadium and Irish Greyhound Board headquarters at the former Greenpark Racecourse was submitted quietly a few days before the Christmas break, as predicted in the last edition of this newspaper.

All segments of the industry hope there will be no objections to yet again delay the new amenity, which is so badly needed and has been promised for so long.

Ballyclough owner Ailish Dilger supplied fastest winner at the opening meeting of the season at the Markets Field, when Winfield Gale clocked 28.91 in an open contest over 525 yards.

Saleen Tanya (3) showed best early pace to lead at the first and second bends for Pat O’Connor of Tarbert. But Winfield Gale (Droopys Vieri-Supreme May), trained by Denis P O’Malley in Drombanna, showed best pace in the back straight.

In front rounding the third bend, Winfield Gale was the two lengths winner from Saleen Tanya, who was a length in front of Mat The Rasher (5), owned by Jack McGann from Mungret.

Another to impress was Cyril Mulcahy’s Fandangos Gal (Fandango Vieri-Mexican Fox). Starting splendidly from trap three in the concluding A4 she swept to an eight lengths win in 29.04 from the Pat Conway-trained and John Horgan-owned Elevator Jack (4)

There was a very tight finish to an A2 in which the Eugene McNulty-owned Hawaiian Sun (3) led down the back straight. But by the third bend, Janesville Last (5) had taken over.

Owned by William O’Driscoll, Janesville Last (Droopys Kewell-Coolcholly Lass) beat Hawaiian Sun by a neck in 29.45 with Billy Murphy’s Caseys Warrior (1) three parts of a lengths behind in third.
