Jimmy Lowe, the captain of the Kilkee Seniors Golfing Society, had been lighting a few candles and praying for a rain free outing for his Captain’s Day at Kilkee Golf Club last Tuesday.
The Castletroy golfer and former Young Munster star, got his wish and a record turnout of fifty members were able to put away their wet gear for the day and would you believe it the sun came out on a few occasion.
Jimmy was a bit perturbed at the start of his day as his first four ball was due off at noon but the Kilkee ladies had decided that they would hold an outing before the old boys teed off. They called the outing a red day and Jimmy and his committee men, Johnny Allen and Mick O’Donoghue were a bit confused until Mick’s wife Carmel turned up in a red Munster jersey. “She asked me to buy that jersey last week” said Mick, “but she never told me it was for golf”. The ladies had decided that everyone who played in their outing wore something red. Their last competitor arrived on the tee box at 11.55 am and Jimmy anxiously pointed out that his seniors were off in five minutes. “We won’t delay you” said the ladies, but Jimmy turned a bright red when one of them rushed into the club house to get her red balloon. The balloon only lasted until the group reached George’s Head.
Eventually the men got under way and the competition was of a high order. Paddy O’Halloran was the bookies favourite to win the event and Paddy duly obliged returning an excellent 37 points for the 16 holes.
Barry O’Shea came second on 36 points and was looking good to win the outing but he slipped up on the last two holes.
Former rugby referee John Allen was fourth with 34 points and Trinity Professor Pat Wall came fifth with 33 points. Other golfers who finished high up the order included former Shannon rugby star Eddie Price. Former junior soccer star Brian Hanrahan, Dave Harrington and Eddie Clohessy. The past Ceannair’s prize was won by Treaty Sarshfield’s Michael Hanrahan while Neil Higgins won the visitors prize with a fine score of 38 points. |
