The odds on Kilmallock winning the Live 95FM Limerick Senior Hurling Championship have tightened considerably after Mike Houlihan's side turned-in an awesome performance (3-22 to 0-15) against Granagh/Ballingarry at the quarter-final stage at Headquarters. Caught out by Murroe/Boher in the preliminaries, Kilmallock bounced back remarkably since then and their display against the 2005 intermediate champions has underlined their credentials as serious contenders for a first championship win since the club's golden days of a decade ago (during which they were tops in Munster twice). For once it wasn't Andrew O'Shaughnessy who emerged as the game's top scorer – he was edged-out on that front by the ageless Paddy Connerry, who positioned himself superbly on a couple of occasions in the closing-half to blast home goals, and emerge with a very fine contribution of 2-1. Shaughs, for his part, helped himself to 1-6, the goal was the first of the afternoon and one which set the south boys up for their scoring spree. Also in the shake-up for success are Murroe/Boher, given a minor fright by underdogs Claughaun at Fitzgerald Park. Some players found the range, but the real gem of a goal was taken by former county star James Butler mid-way through the closing half. The Tobin brother of Pat, Kevin and teenager Sean chipped in with seven points in the 1-13 to 0-11 victory. The semi-final draw pits Kilmallock against Croom, with Adare to meet Murroe/Boher. Both semi-finals go ahead at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday week, with 3.30pm and 2pm starting times, respectively. |
