A Swedish research team has recently come up with some great news for golfers.

A study of 300,000 golfers revealed that the men and ladies who hit the small ball were 40 per cent less likely to die, at any given age, than those who did not play the game.

The researchers said that this equates to an average of five extra years of life.

The Limerick Garda Golf Society has obviously taken this research very seriously. They must have one of the largest golfing societies in Munster boasting a membership of over 100.

The Swedish research team went on to say that despite the lack of intense physical activity, golf is still a healthy pursuit as the golfer usually walks more than four miles over the 18 holes.

The society actively encourages retired members to play in the society and this year’s President is the popular Dave Acton.

Dave is a staunch member of Kilkee Golf Club and plays in the senior tournament in July and August.

The top prize in the Kilkee Seniors is normally three golf balls and Dave has a garage full of balls.

The President, playing off a 20 handicap, would come under the ‘handy’ golfer category.

However, the research team found that the best players, those playing off single figures, were the healthiest of all.

Finn Philips is this year’s Garda Society captain and Joe Walsh is the vice captain.

PJ Joyce is the hard working secretary and he has his work cut out for him as the society, which was formed in the early 70s, plays 17 outings a year, as well as an away trip to Spain in November.

They had a very successful outing to Mount Juliet last April where Noel Naughton took the top prize and they stayed overnight to play in Kilkenny Golf Club the next day.
