FOR the umpteenth time, Munster produced another masterful performance which put Sale Sharks (16-24) to the sword in their own fortress of Edgley Park and slotted the defending champions into pole position in terms of topping Pool One and easing through to the knock-out stages yet again.

It was a committed display by Tony McGahan’s side, one which won the admiration for home coach Philippe Saint Andre. “Munster are a very good team and they’re not European champions because they are lucky. Munster deserved it because they were the better side.”

Although, as pointed out by man-of-the-match David Wallace at the weekend that “you don’t win Heineken Cups in October, but you can lose them,” Munster fans will be keen to note confirmation by the organisers ERC that this season’s final will be played at Murrayfield on Saturday, May 23rd.

It’s the second such decider to be staged in the Scottish capital and will kick-off at 5pm, presumably to facilitate live television coverage of the contest by Sky Sports.

Advance sales for the final are now running at around 30,000.

And the ERC also announced this week that the 23,500 who filed through the turnstiles on the opening weekend of the competition at the newly refurbished Thomond Park to watch Munster’s narrow win over Montauban established a record European Pool gate for the Irish province.

Munster have a break from the competition now until they travel to face ASM Clermont Auvergne at Stade Marcel Michelin in early December.

Next weekend, leaders Munster are on the road to Ravenhill in Belfast to face Ulster in the Magners League.

Elsewhere, Niall O’Donovan, out of the game since failing to find a place in Declan Kidney’s Irish management, has been appointed Ireland A assistant coach, working with coach Michael Bradley and manager Joey Miles.
