TAOISEACH Brian Cowen and IRFU President John Lyons will formally open the new €40m Thomond Park on Tuesday next when Munster host New Zealand.
This eagerly anticipated encounter outing marks the 30th anniversary of the province’s famous and much celebrated 12-0 win over the All Blacks at the same venue.
The Taoiseach is almost certain to be buzzing with anticipation for the match—in his younger days, Brian Cowen was, by all accounts, a half-decent performer with Cistercian College, Roscrea.
Another VIP guest at the fixture will be golf superstar Padraig Harrington, who is expected to announce details the following day of the planned return after five years of the 2010 JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am.
This event raised a staggering €30-million plus when it was last staged at Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort.
Not surprisingly, tickets for this most eagerly awaited rugby contest at the new 26,000-capacity stadium have long since been sold-out, but Needaticket.ie is offering tickets at the venue for inflated prices.
The Irish operator has defended its practice of selling tickets for major matches at grossly inflated prices as consumer-driven.
Another online ticket company – the onlineticketshop.com – is also charging multiple official prices for tickets.
Christy Cantillon scored the game’s only try way back in 1978, which Tony Ward converted and later added two drop goals, for a great personal and team triumph.
“How I sum up that game all these years on, is that we kept New Zealand to nil, and that in itself was a huge achievement. And, secondly we actually beat them by three scores to nil, counting the try and conversion as one, so three times we got down close to their line and managed to come away with scores,” recounted Ward.
Meanwhile, the history of the All Blacks in Limerick over 100 Years is the subject of an illustrated talk, to be delivered by author and Limerick Leader editor Alan English at Limerick City Library, The Granary, tomorrow (Thursday), at 8pm.  Admission is free.
