While Ireland’s dismal form in the World Cup will have an effect on all Irish rugby for a while, Munster’s second string have got off to an excellent start in the Magners League, adding the Newport Gwent Dragons scalp to that of Llanelli.

It was that man Paul Warwick again who did the business in Wales, with a couple of long-range penalties and an intercept try.

It will be interesting to see if coach Declan Kidney can accommodate Warwick in the back-line when Ronan O’Gara returns.

Connacht coach Michael Bradley often played the Australian at outside centre in the Western Provinces team, and some knowledgeable observers think that centre is Warwick’s best position.

He is quick and would be an ideal inside foil for All Black Doug Howlett.

Munster return to Musgrave Park on Friday in the Magners League when the Cardiff Blues will provide the opposition. The kick off is at 7.30pm.

The following two weeks they will be away to the Ospreys and Glasgow Warriors respectively and then return to Musgrave Park to play Edinburgh on Saturday November 3.

The Heineken Cup commences on Saturday November 10, with Munster travelling to Coventry to play Wasps.

The following Sunday they will play their first game in Thomond Park when French side Clermont Auvergne come to Limerick for the first time.

Paul and the boys may be deeply disappointed at their World Cup showing but once they pull on the red jersey again in front of the Thomond Park supporters, they will be welcomed home with open arms.
Time heals all wounds.
