Page 1 of 2 Simon Moroney, the outgoing Munster Council Secretary, is in wholly in favour of the reintroduced seeded draw to the Munster Senior Football Championship.
In his view that the competition will ensure that the final is “generally” contested by the best teams, states the departing official is his report to next weekend’s annual convention in Ennis. Expressing surprise that the decision taken to change from an open draw attracted such negative comment, he points out that it was the “democratic wish” of the counties after a consultative process.
In defence of the draw, Mr Moroney says its should be remembered that it is the two finalists from the previous year who are seeded–“and not necessarily Cork and Kerry, though this may generally be the outcome based on their relative county strengths.” The two big guns contested last year’s provincial decider and therefore have been seeded through to the semi-final of the ‘08 competition. Limerick are away to Tipperary in the opening round with the winners at home to All-Ireland finalists Cork at the semi-final stage. In the other side of the draw Clare face Waterford and next-up for the victors is a tilt with All-Ireland three-in-a-row seeking Kerry.
At the time of the vote, several months back now, Limerick Football Board was vehemently opposed to a return a seeded championship but it’s unclear as to how the county’s delegates voted at the time.
